Partial rent payment receipt: what should a landlord issue?

When a tenant pays only part of the rent, the safest document is a payment acknowledgment. It confirms the amount received without pretending the whole period is settled.

The short rule

If the month is fully paid, issue a rent receipt. If only part of the rent has been paid, issue a payment acknowledgment and mention the remaining balance.

Full paymentUse a rent receipt.
Partial paymentUse a payment acknowledgment.
Remaining balanceKeep the unpaid amount visible.
